Most MSPs don’t have a staffing problem. They have an automation problem that looks like a staffing problem. Every ticket a human touches that a script could have closed is margin walking out the door. Here are five automation plays that consistently move the needle — ordered by how quickly you’ll see returns.
1. Self-healing monitors, not just alerts
An alert that pages a technician to restart a service is a half-finished automation. In your RMM, pair every high-frequency monitor with a remediation script: disk cleanup when a volume crosses 90%, service restart with a verification check, print spooler flushes. The goal is that the ticket is created and resolved before anyone reads it — with a note explaining what happened.
Start here: pull your top 10 recurring alert types from the last 90 days. At least half are scriptable.
2. Onboarding as a pipeline
New-client onboarding is where undocumented, inconsistent work hides. Turn it into a repeatable sequence: agent deployment, patch policy assignment, security baseline, documentation sync, and a QA checklist — all triggered from a single runbook. Tools like ImmyBot make software baselines deterministic instead of tribal knowledge.
3. Patch compliance you can prove
Don’t just push patches — measure them. A weekly automated report showing patch compliance per client turns a background task into a visible deliverable your clients actually value (and pay for). Automate the report generation; don’t build it by hand every Friday.
4. Kill the copy-paste with integrations
Every time a technician retypes data between your RMM, PSA, and documentation platform, you’re paying for a robot’s job with a human’s time. A handful of well-placed integrations — or a small custom middleware service — eliminates whole categories of manual entry and the errors that come with it.
5. Triage before a human sees it
Auto-categorize, auto-prioritize, and auto-route inbound tickets based on content and source. Even simple rules (VIP client + server keyword → high priority queue) reclaim minutes on every ticket, and minutes compound across thousands of tickets a month.
The compounding effect
None of these is dramatic on its own. Together, they change the shape of your business: technicians spend their day on work that requires judgment, not repetition, and you scale headcount slower than you scale clients.
That’s exactly the work we do for MSPs day to day. If you want a second set of eyes on where automation would pay off fastest in your stack, let’s talk.
